I have a friend who works in high tech, has 3 kids, jets back and forth across the country 2-3 times/month and seems to accomplish more in 24 hours than anyone I know. When I asked her how she manages, she smiled and opened up the fridge in her garage. It was chock full of Red Bull and next to the fridge was 6 other cases stacked to the side. "With all the travel, I never know when I'll be able to do a Costco run." I noticed that there was big packages of toilet paper and paper towels, but the stand out item was Red Bull.

In the study, functional MRI was used to monitor brain activity in 17 smokers and 17 nonsmokers as they watched movie scenes that featured smoking. When they saw those scenes, the smokers' brains showed increased activity in areas involved in movement of the hand they use to smoke.

Knowing whether someone you love has a problem with alcohol or drugs isn't as straightforward as it sounds. Despite the stereotypes of the staggering drunk or the emaciated addict, most people who overuse alcohol and drugs become adept at disguising their behavior. Shame, embarrassment, and fear of consequences are powerful motivators. And in many cases, the person who's drinking too much or using drugs doesn't want to recognize or admit that he's not in control of the situation.
